Term 2, Week 3 (10th April 09)
Q1) What are some of the things that schools in Singapore
are doing in order to take care of the environment?
Answer : Some schools are asking their students to bring electricity
bills from home to track their month-to-month energy use and are
teaching them to save energy. Some school even stepping up themselves,
the emphasis on issues like energy conservation and climate change.
The emphasis on environment education is 'timely, given the growing
awareness of environmental issues around the world'. Some schools also
contribute fruit peels to the school's three compost bins, which convert
food waste into fertilizers. Commonwealth Secondary has its own wetland
which treats grey water from bathroom sinks. Students test how clean the
treated water is and study the wetland's plants and animals. At another
secondary school, students decided that cardboard takeaway boxes in the
canteen should be banned. Students and teachers bring their own boxes to
pack their food instead.
Q2) Do you think one person's effort in reducing, reusing
and recycling will make a difference in saving the environment?
What steps have you taken in the effort to save the earth?
Answer : No, the effort of one person for reducing, reusing and recycling
won't make any difference as while the person is recycling things and
the thousands and millions of others don't. What I've done so far is just
helping to switch off the lights and fans in class when we are not using them.
My school also had this recycling box for us to throw the things that can
be recycle. I usually throw the waste papers in the box provided.
